Senate President Godswill Akpabio has criticized outgoing Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, for turning against his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole, despite Oshiomhole's key role in his rise to power. During a Senate debate, Akpabio remarked, "The man you brought in as governor (Obaseki) has turned against you and against democracy." In response, Oshiomhole clarified, stating, "Just for the record, I didn’t bring him in; he was elected, but I supported him, just as you supported Governor Udom."
Oshiomhole was instrumental in Obaseki's emergence as governor in 2016, going against the preferences of All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders, who had favored Pius Odubu or another candidate. With Oshiomhole’s backing, Obaseki defeated Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate. However, tension grew two years into Obaseki’s tenure when party leaders expressed dissatisfaction with his governance, accusing him of sidelining them. Attempts by Oshiomhole to mediate failed, leading to a rift between the two as Obaseki firmly rejected any form of "godfatherism."
Ahead of the 2024 governorship election, Obaseki sought reconciliation with Oshiomhole in support of his preferred successor, Asue Ighodalo, but the efforts were unsuccessful, with Ighodalo ultimately losing the election.
