Nigerian musician Inetimi Alfred Odom, better known as Timaya, has expressed concern over the rising global economic challenges, highlighting the intense financial strain in Nigeria. In a recent interview with Channels Television, the artist shared his thoughts on the widespread hardship, noting that while economic struggles are global, the situation in Nigeria is particularly severe. “Things are really tough. I feel for the people because if they are not happy, I can't be happy either. I pay bills and help many people, so I understand what they are going through. I’m feeling it too,” Timaya said.
He explained how the soaring cost of living has impacted him personally, especially in terms of supporting his staff and family members. “Salaries and upkeep have drastically increased. Even politicians are feeling the pinch, so you can imagine how it is for the rest of us. The only way to cope with the rising costs is if you’re earning in foreign currency. If you're making money in dollars and converting it to naira, that’s how you can manage.” Timaya added that economic difficulties are widespread, affecting even countries like the U.S., where people earn and spend in dollars. “It’s tough everywhere right now, but Nigeria is feeling it the most.”
The "Plantain Boy" singer also touched on the impact of the economic downturn on the entertainment industry. “Promoting music now requires a lot of money. In the past, shooting a music video might cost N1.5 million. Now, a video can cost between N50 million to N100 million, and promotion requires even more investment. This is why booking fees for artists have gone up significantly.” Timaya’s remarks reflect the broader sentiment of many Nigerians grappling with rising living costs and economic challenges, as both individuals and businesses struggle to adapt.Click here to watch video
